Go-Ahead London is the capital’s largest bus operator. Approximately 7,500 staff from 16 locations, mainly in South and Southwest London, are committed to providing a high-quality passenger experience on around 160 routes under contract to Transport for London (TfL). We run just under a quarter of the London bus network using 2,450 buses and provide an essential public service.
We are looking to recruit school bus drivers based at Bexleyheath and Orpington garage. This role is a 39-week school term time contract and is ideal for someone who would like to have time off during the school holidays.
We are looking for someone who is reliable and can always provide a consistently friendly and professional safe and comfortable service. Additionally, you will need to be flexible, so you are able to commute to either location easily.

We are looking to expand our dedicated team of commercial drivers that work on our Private Hire and commercial activities such as contract work, rail replacement duties as well as major events. About you and the role of an Apprentice Bus Driver
You are applying for the role of Apprentice Bus Driver for Go-Ahead. Applying for the position of an Apprentice Bus Driver could be the start of a journey within an industry that grows its business by encouraging and developing those who see this as a genuine career opportunity.
You will be enrolled on to our apprenticeship programme which is called “Passenger Transport Driver - Bus, Coach & Tram (Level 2)". The apprenticeship programme lasts for 53 weeks, during which time you will receive additional training over and above the initial licence acquisition training to pass the PCV tests. Once you have successfully completed the apprenticeship programme you will gain a nationally recognised qualification which is equivalent to 5 good GCSE's.
This is a full time, permanent position. As buses run 7 days a week, 364 days a year, your work pattern will reflect that. You will be required to work the full range of shifts which will include early mornings, late finishes, working weekends and public holidays. This is also the case when you are in training.
This is a customer facing role where you will be expected to answer customer queries, make announcements over the public address system fitted to our vehicles and deal with a variety of situations as part of your day-to-day role. It is therefore essential that our drivers can communicate effectively and deal with people in a tactful, confident, and professional manner.
As an Apprentice Bus Driver, you will need to be numerate and literate; applicants will need to demonstrate these skills by passing a Level 1 functional skills assessment as part of the initial recruitment process.

Who are we
We are currently recruiting experienced PCV licence holders to join our established team of casual drivers, primarily operating Rail Replacement work, on weekends, public holidays and occasional weekdays. Go-Ahead London is the largest bus company in the capital. We employ just over 7,000 drivers from 17 locations, mainly in the South, North and East London. Our vehicle fleet is approximately 2,300 buses.
The role involves;
- Operating shifts on an ad-hoc basis, including early, late and night shifts, out of various Go-Ahead London garages.
- Dealing with the public
- Driving various PCV vehicles within the company fleet (buses and coaches)
As a casual employee, there is no minimum commitment, and you choose your availability to suit your lifestyle. Allocation of shifts is subject to availability.
Most of our work is available on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and weekday evenings.
As a casual driver, you will be responsible for keeping your CPC in date, however, if you operate more than 20 full shifts in a calendar year you will have the option to attend one of our inhouse CPC courses for free.
You will be reporting directly to the Commercial Operations Manager. However, due to working out of our various garages in Greater London, virtually all work will be requested, allocated and posted, via our web-based employee portal. Therefore, having good knowledge and the ability to be self-sufficient in the use of email and web-based systems will be key. You must also have a proactive approach towards communication as building a positive relationship with the Commercial Operating Manager and Supervisors will be essential.
We are offering pay of £19.10 per hour (this includes £2.06 per hour in lieu of accruing holiday entitlement). Specifically, this means the holiday you accrue will be paid within your hourly rate, on a pay as you go basis (rolled up holiday pay). There will not be weekly minimum work/hours guarantee. However full duties will be paid sign on to sign off (inclusive of meal reliefs) with a minimum shift of 5 hrs 30.
All licence medicals will be included in this role as well as company uniform. Given the nature of the work, you will not be eligible for any staff travel concessions.
About you
You must have the following:
- A current valid PCV (category D) licence on a UK driving licence
- A current, up to date UK Driver Qualification Card
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to read maps independently
- Be smart in appearance and willing to wear company uniform
- Must not be undertaking any other driving employment
- Accident-free driving record for the last 2 years
- Have no more than 6 points on driver’s license (No DR’s, CD’s and TT99)
- Excellent Customer service skills
- Good knowledge of London and the South of England
